JOHANNESBURG - Speakers at a memorial service for late veteran photojournalist Alf Kumalo on Thursday described him as a "gentleman and a father figure to many of his colleagues".

The memorial was held at the Gauteng Legislature.

It was attended by significant figures in the media, politics and the music world.

Kumalo died on Sunday at the age of 82.

The memorial service was also attended by musician Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, who went down memory lane with his saxophone.

Renowned author Don Mattera made sure that the occasion was not a sombre one.

All speakers echoed the same sentiment, saying the man they were celebrating was affectionately called 'Bra Alf' - a principled journalist, a smart dresser and a people's person.
