CAPE TOWN - An 18-year-old Khayelitsha teenager accused of killing Cape Town metro police officer Mpumelelo Xakekile is due to apply for bail in November.

Sandisile Ncapayi appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He is charged with the murder of the 50-year-old police officer who was shot and killed while issuing a fine to a taxi driver in the township last week.

The suspect has also dumped his legal aid lawyer for a new private attorney.

His new lawyer, Mabuti Mgwebile, said they are preparing for the bail application.

"It's premature for me to preempt the outcome of the bail application. The outcome will be manifested when we unfold the process in court."

Xakekile died on his wife's birthday.

He was one of four law enforcement officer who have been killed in Cape Town in recent weeks
