JOHANNESBURG - Questions are now being asked about whether Sport and Recreation Minister Fikile Mbalula can keep his job in cabinet, after being quoted as saying President Jacob Zuma was "politically bankrupt".

The Sports Minister has denied making the comments to The Star, but the newspaper says it is sticking to its story.

The comments made by Mbalula and the response from the ANC's provincial spokesperson in the Eastern Cape, Mlibo Qoboshiyane - that Mbalula was behaving like a child - appear to be a signal that the ruling party's leadership brace is growing increasingly personal.

Political analyst Somadoda Fikeni said this was to be expected.

He said closer to Mangaung, the storm was likely to get worse before it settled. He said the road to Mangaung was becoming bumpy.

Fikeni also said if it was proved Mbalula made the comments about Zuma, pressure could grow from within the ANC for Zuma to fire him.
