Presidency downplays Mbalula 'rant'
Mbalula allegedly said Zuma was “politically bankrupt” and “gets married every week”.
JOHANNESBURG - The Presidency on Monday downplayed the controversy surrounding Sports Minister and ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member Fikile Mbalula's attack on President Jacob Zuma.
This after he allegedly claimed Zuma was "politically bankrupt" and "gets married every week".
Earlier on Monday, Mbalula reportedly told _The Star _newspaper that he had no time for "a leader who thrived on corruption".
He was apparently responding to Zuma allies who told the paper that Mbalula was not welcome in the president's inner circle because he ran an anti-Zuma campaign based on personal attacks.
Mbalula was tipped to take over as ANC secretary general, but that campaign suffered a blow after only Limpopo and the ANC Youth League nominated him for the position.
Presidency spokesperson Mac Maharaj said, "I think there is a type of situation that has arisen where people speak beyond their own understanding in political contestations.
"There is nothing unusual about it. I have also seen it happen in the USA."
The ANC's elective conference will take place in Mangaung over December.
