JOHANNESBURG/CAPE TOWN - Gauteng can expect unfavourable weather conditions to continue throughout Sunday.

The South African Weather Service said conditions are only expected to clear up by this evening.

Severe rain and hail hit parts of the province on Saturday.

Numerous accidents were including three separate accidents involving eight cars on the N1 south highway between Allendale and New Road offramps.

Forecaster for the weather service, Edwin Themba said," 60 percent chance of thundershowers is expected which could come down anytime during today."

Rescue operations will continue this morning following heavy floods between Port Elizabeth and East London.

People were forced to use alternate routes as numerous bridges and roads in surrounding areas were closed.

Three fatalities were reported earlier this week when a car was swept off a bridge.

The Department of Roads and Public Works said the affected roads in PE could not be used and numerous residents were evacuated.

Meanwhile, four people were rescued after their cars were swept away due to heavy rainfall near Napier.

And officials at Eden District in the Southern Cape are also on high alert due to the inclement weather.
