JOHANNESBURG - Several branches in Gauteng have reportedly thrown their weight behind Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba for a position in the top six of the ANC.

The party's leadership will be contested at the national conference in Mangaung at the end of the year.

The City Press newspaper reported that more than 30 branches have nominated Gigaba for the position of secretary general which is currently held by Gwede Mantashe.

Political analyst Adam Habib said younger ANC members campaigning for a generational split in the leadership could be behind his nomination.
