In the Eastern Cape, severe rain has caused flooding in large parts of the province.

JOHANNESBURG - Two people were injured in three separate accidents on the N1 near Midrand during severe rain and hail on Saturday.

Initially reports were that 11 cars were involved in the pile-up but paramedics confirmed that only eight cars were involved.

Both the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and paramedics have been unable to say if there were any fatalities.

JMPD's Wayne Minnaar said one of the accident occurred between the Allandale and New Road off ramps.

"Motorists who are driving in the Midrand area are requested to drive with caution and must keep their headlights on in the rainy weather."

ER 24's Andre Visser said paramedics were on the scene.

"I can confirm that we have various vehicles on that scene, there, and that further details will follow."

In the Eastern Cape, severe rain caused flooding in large parts of the province.

The worst affected areas were on the eastern belt between Port Elizabeth and East London.

The police's John Fabian said disaster management plans have been put in place, as more rain is expected on Saturday.

"The dam here is flooding into the road.
