Gold Fields fires 1,500 striking miners
Spokesperson Willie Jacobz said the workers have 24 hours to appeal against their dismissals.
JOHANNESBURG - Gold Fields on Thursday fired 1,500 employees after they failed to show up for work by the 2pm deadline.
Earlier this week, the company issued an ultimatum to striking employees to report for duty on Thursday or face immediate dismissal.
On Sunday, 11,000 workers at the KDC West Mine went on strike to demand higher wages.
Gold Fields spokesperson Willie Jacobz said the 1,500 workers who failed to show up were fired.
"They have 24 hours to appeal their dismissal."
