'Govt. builds 170,000 houses'
The Human Settlements Department on Thursday said it has built 170,000 houses in 2012.
CAPE TOWN - The Human Settlements Department on Thursday said it has built 170,000 houses in 2012.
This was revealed in a Parliamentary reply to questions from the Congress of the People.
During the 2011-2012 financial year, Gauteng saw the highest number of low-costs houses being built.
More than 38,000 new homes were constructed.
Another 27,000 RDP houses were built in KwaZulu-Natal.
Most provinces, with the exception of the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and the North West, saw a decline in the number of homes being built.
More than 19,000 homes were erected in the Western Cape, which is a drop from 2011's figure of 24,500.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape Human Settlements Department said it cannot keep up with the demand, as more people flock to the province annually.
