CAPE TOWN - Eyewitness News learned on Wednesday morning that yet another police officer was shot in the Western Cape.

The officer was shot in the stomach while searching a suspect in Belhar on Tuesday night.

Police's November Philander said the suspect fled the scene and the officer was hospitalised in a Bellville clinic.

"He fired several shots at the police officer in the stomach and fled in an unknown direction. The police officer was taken to hospital."

He appealed to the community to come forward with any information.

The shooting brings the total number of officers shot in Cape Town to four in less than a week.

Two officers were shot and killed in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay over the weekend and last Wednesday senior superintendent Mpumelelo Xakekile was gunned down in Khayelitsha.

An 18-year-old youth was arrested in connection with his murder and will appear in court again next week.

Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer said officials were working under dangerous conditions.
