CAPE TOWN - A youth was arrested at the weekend in connection with the killing of a Cape Town Metro police officer.

In less than a week, three law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in the Western Cape.

The 18-year-old was apprehended for the murder of senior superintendent Mpumelelo Xakekile.

Another suspect was taken in for questioning, but was later released.

The youth is expected to appear in court on Monday.

Xakekile was gunned down while issuing a fine to a taxi driver last week.

Meanwhile, two South African Police Service (SAPS) members were shot and killed at the weekend while on patrol in Imizamo Yehtu in Hout Bay.

The police's Frederick Van Wyk said a reward has been offered for any information that will help catch those responsible.

"Anyone with information regarding both these incidents is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10 111."

The motive behind the shootings is unclear.
