Madonsela receives over 20,000 complaints
The office of the public protector has received over 20,000 complaints in the past financial year.
CAPE TOWN - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on Friday said justice departments received the highest number of complaints during the past financial year, followed by municipalities.
Madonsela was briefing Parliament's justice portfolio committee on her office's annual report.
Madonsela said her office received more than 20,000 new complaints in the past financial year.
When she turned her attention to state institutions with the highest number of complaints, one committee member quipped, "You mean the top culprits".
Madonsela said organs of states which fall under the Department of Justice received the most complaints, but she explained they were not necessarily against the department itself.
"It's mostly really delays and appeals."
Home Affairs is in the top four with 1,135 complaints while the police service is ranked sixth with 688.
