The Spear gets declassified
The FPB’s appeal panel has decided to declassify the controversial ‘The Spear’ painting.
JOHANNESBURG - The Film and Publication Board (FPB)'s appeal panel on Wednesday declassified 'The Spear' painting.
Artist Brett Murray's portrait was on show at Johannesburg's Goodman Gallery and showed President Jacob Zuma with his genitals exposed.
The board then gave the painting an age restriction of 16 because it displayed nudity.
FPB spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase said, "The board is studying the ruling of the appeals panel. We will issue a comprehensive statement on the matter in coming weeks."
The controversial artwork was also defaced by two members of the public while on display at the gallery, but is now with an art collector in Germany.
