JOHANNESBURG - Workers from Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) Mine in Rustenburg will on Wednesday march to the regional offices of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) to cancel their membership.

More than 12,000 miners were fired by Amplats last week, after failing to show up for disciplinary hearings in connection with their illegal strike.

The miners said their colleagues from all Amplats shafts would participate in the march.

Police spokesperson Captain Dennis Adriao said no application to march had yet been authroised by public safety authorities.

He said that would deem their march illegal and force police to "act accordingly".

Meanwhile, union giant said it did not know why miners would march to their offices after having already been dismissed.

The union's spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said, "We don't know what the demand is now. Miners cannot cancel their membership when they have been dismissed, because they are unemployed."
