JOHANNESBURG - Police on Tuesday said the situation at Anglo American's Platinum (Amplats) Mine was calm this morning, and no spontaneous gatherings having been reported.

Dismissed Amplats employees have been staging illegal gatherings for four weeks as part of their strike for higher wages.

Last week, the company fired 12,000 of its employees, but that has not stopped them marching to Amplats' operations in Rustenburg.

Police spokesperson Captain Dennis Adrio said they were maintaining a strong presence in the area.

The miners illegal strike has seen sporadic attacks and one death.
