Minister concerned about sea deaths
Transport Minister Ben Martins is concerned that too many fishermen may be dying due to negligence.
CAPE TOWN - Transport Minister Ben Martins on Tuesday said too many fishermen are losing their lives at sea as there are not stringent international laws governing the sector.
Earlier, he opened the three-day shipping vessel safety conference in Cape Town.
Delegates are expected to adopt an agreement that will set international standards for small-scale companies and fishermen.
Martins said too many die at sea due to negligence.
He said the safety of those working on fishing boats is of paramount interest.
"Over the past 30 years, the sector that deals with small boats has not been uniformly regulated."
