FREE STATE - Expelled ANC Youth League (ANCYL) president Julius Malema on Tuesday told miners from the Beatrix Mine in Meloding to go on strike for a basic wage of R16,000.

He was speaking for the first time since he was granted bail on a charge of money laundering in September.

People of all ages greeted Malema with songs, with ANCYL leaders battling to silence them ahead of his address.

Malema told a crowd of about 400 people to fight for better working conditions.

The controversial politician said he supports their struggle and that their demands are not unreasonable.

"You must never be scared. Stand firm on your belief and continue to fight for what is right. Defend the R16,000 because it is possible."
