CAPE TOWN - A Khayelitsha dance teacher has been found guilty of raping seven young girls.

Lawrence Gagu appeared in the Western Cape High Court on Tuesday, during a special sitting in Khayelitsha, Cape Town.

The rapes occurred between 2009 and 2010.

Gagu looked down as Judge Nonkosi Saba gave the background to the case.

This entailed the details of testimony given by some the girls.

According to a 10-year-old rape victim, she was sexually assaulted 12 times, while others said they were raped either two or three times.

Most of the incidents occurred shortly after Gagu had given dance lessons.

He would then threaten to kill them and their parents if they reported him.

Saba found Gagu guilty on seven counts of rape, saying the girls' testimony was credible.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Appeal earlier overturned a life sentence of a Limpopo rapist.

The court ruled that the man did not deserve a life sentence because the child did not cry or scream during the act.

The court took into consideration that the 15-year-old had not suffered any serious physical harm.

The man's sentence has been reduced to 15 years.
