CAPE TOWN - The ANC says it backs suspended councillor Andile Lili's intentions to challenge the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.

A City of Cape Town committee found Lili guilty of misconduct several weeks ago.

The matter was related to the destruction of people's homes in Khayelitsha and allegations that Lili swore at a community member.

Lili, who gained prominence by leading protests against the City during the Makhaza open air toilet saga, has vowed to challenge the findings of the hearing.

The ANC chief Whip in the council, Xolani Sotashe, says they want to be part of the disciplinary committee.

"We don't know what transpired in the [hearing]. It is only members who serve on the disciplinary committee who have the privilege of knowing what took place. We have to support him as the ANC so that we know at the end of the day that the decision was fair."
