JOHANNESBURG - A Daveyton primary school principal has been fired by the Department of Education for misappropriating school funds.

Paul Mbhele's disciplinary appeal was denied on Friday, with the department insisting he can no longer remain a principal at Kuzimisela Primary School.

Gauteng education's Charles Phahlane says, "He recommended us to pay an educator for a period that they were not working. We overpaid an educator on his recommendation. He also settled the debt of another teacher at the school."

Meanwhile, the National and Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa (Naptosa) believes teachers face massive challenges while on the job.

It says one of the biggest challenges include the high pupil to teacher ratio in the classroom.

Naptosa's David Miller says, "Bigger classes means less attention for those children that really need it, and some children fall through the cracks, eventually they drop out of the system and that's very sad."
