MARIKANA - The National Union of Mineworkers (Num) on Friday said one of its members was gunned down at Lonmin's Marikana Mine in the North West Province.

According to the union, the person killed was a senior member.

Num spokesperson Frans Baleni said it is painful to see another member dying in this manner.

"This person was one of our key witnesses in the judicial commission of inquiry. He was threatened after pointing out key areas of conflict."

This now brings to 47 the number of people killed at the mine.

The inquiry was set up by President Jacob Zuma to investigate the police shooting that claimed the lives of 34 people on August 16.

At least 12 others were killed in the violence that ensued before and after the police shooting.

The workers have since returned to work after accepting a wage offer from Lonmin bosses.

The inquiry has been postponed to October 22.
