JOHANNESBURG - Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor has been named as the new permanent Minister of Home Affairs.

The announcement was made through a statement released by the Presidency on Wednesday.

Pandor will be leaving her position to take over from Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who will be starting her job as head of the African Union (AU).

Deputy Minister Derek Hanekom will now replace Pandor.

"Pandor and Hanekom distinguished themselves in their current portfolios and I am confident that they will do exceptionally well in their new responsibilities," President Jacob Zuma said.

Hanekom is expected to be sworn in at the Union Buildings on Thursday.
