NEWLANDS - The Lions are back at the top of the Currie Cup log after a 22-9 win over Western Province on Saturday.

They scored the only try of the match, through an intercept by Lions wing Deon Helberg.

It put the Newlands Stadium game to bed, with about 15 minutes to play.

Flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis scored all Province's nine points with the boot.

But the key figure for the Lions was former Springbok Butch James.

Despite getting a yellow card early in the second half, he kept the scoreboard ticking - ensuring Province were always chasing the game.

The Lions are now now top the log, but Province remains in contention for a semi-final spot.

Province are currently in third position, with two games still to play.
