JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Saturday encouraged the youth of South Africa to actively assist their communities and police in dealing with crime.

Statistics reported by Statistics South Africa this week, showed that murder rates decreased by 3,1 percent while sexual offences decreased by 3.7 percent.

Mthethwa had this message for the students.

"We really encourage them to use their intellectual reservoir to make an impact both in fighting crime."
