Police cannot rest - Phiyega
National police chief Riah Phiyega says officers cannot rest until every citizen feels safe.
CAPE TOWN - National police commissioner Riah Phiyega on Friday said cops cannot rest until every citizen feels safe, even though there has been a nationwide decline in contact crimes.
She addressed officers in Goodwood, Cape Town, following the release of national crime figures on Thursday.
Phiyega congratulated the men and women in blue following the overall drop in crime figures.
But the top cop was quick to add there was no time to relax.
"Every endeavour will be made by us to make further inroads."
The commissioner said police managed to bring peace and calm to Marikana.
Phiyega was referring to the police shooting in the North West town, which left 34 miners dead.
She also called on South Africans to cooperate with officials in order to rid communities of lawlessness.
