Lawyer confirms Malema warrant
Julius Malema's lawyer has confirmed that a warrant for his arrest was secured on Friday morning.
JOHANNESBURG - Former ANC Youth League (ANCYL) leader Julius Malema's lawyer has confirmed that a warrant for his arrest was secured on Friday morning.
Attorney Nicqui Galaktiou said she has not yet seen the warrant and does not know what charges he will face.
"We were informed today that a warrant of arrest was issued for Mr. Malema. We do not have a copy of that warrant."
According to a City Press report, Malema will be charged with money laundering, corruption and fraud.
The case apparently relates to his Ratanang Family Trust and its involvement with an engineering company, which made millions from Limpopo government tenders.
Arrangements are being made for Malema to appear in court in either Pretoria or Polokwane.
Both the Hawks and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) would not reveal much about the warrant.
Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela said he does not know about the warrant.
NPA spokesperson Bulelwa Makeka said the prosecuting body can only comment once the accused appears in court.
Earlier this week, Eyewitness News reported about Malema's imminent arrest.
In a brief telephonic interview on Friday, Malema refused to speak about the latest development.
Malema maintains his innocence.
