CAPE TOWN - The latest crime statistics on Thursday revealed that children are increasingly targeted by criminals nationwide.

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced the 2011/2012 figures in Parliament, Cape Town.

At least two children are killed in South Africa every day.

Nationally, over 15,000 people were murdered in the last year.

While adult men account for about 80 percent of this figure, almost 800 children were killed over the same period.

Mthethwa said more than 70 sexual offences cases involving minors were also recorded daily.

"We shall be intensifying the war against crime, especially against young children, to make sure this trend changes."

Mthethwa said the Police Ministry is particularly concerned about the targeting and abuse of some of most vulnerable citizens.
