Crime on the decrease - Mthethwa
The Police Minister announces a nationwide decrease in crime across most categories.
CAPE TOWN - Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Thursday announced a nationwide decrease in crime across most categories.
Mthethwa is releasing the crime statistics for the year 2011/2012 in Parliament.
There has been a 3.1 percent drop in the murder rate, a 5.2 percent drop in attempted murder and a 1.9 percent drop in the number of reported rapes.
Mthethwa has however emphasised the statistics are not good enough, and that the fight to end violence against women and children must continue to be a key focus for police.
"We need to emphasise that as government we are, however, still concerned about the scourge of rape in our country.
"Rape decreased by 1.9 percent, but it is unacceptably high. More resources and better training of police mechanisms are now being put in place."
Meanwhile, cash heists are down nearly 40 percent and bank robberies by 10.3 percent.
But business robberies has seen an increase of 7.5 percent.
Mthethwa said small businesses were being targeted the most.
