CAPE TOWN - The majority of young people in South Africa do not know what fracking is.

The term refers to hydraulic fracturing.

It has been in the news after government lifted the ban on shale gas exploration in the Karoo.

Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu explained that some drilling would be involved in the exploration process, but not hydraulic fracturing.

Fracking was also used in a survey, conducted by consumer insights company, Pondering Panda.

Spokesperson Shirley Wakefield says almost two out of three respondents had not heard of the technique.

"It seems awareness is fairly low when it comes to having heard of fracking. About 62 percent say they haven't heard of fracking."

Meanwhile, environmentalists up in arms after government lifted the moratorium on shale gas exploration.

They have threatened to take the matter to court.
