Bring the gift of food to Marikana
Gift of the Givers will be stationed in Marikana this week to assist community members with food.
JOHANNESBURG - Aid organisation Gift of the Givers will be stationed in Marikana this week to assist community members who have been left with no food following a four week illegal strike.
Mineworkers have been unable to provide for their families after not being paid in August due to the strike.
The strike claimed the lives of 44 people following clashes with police.
Gift of the Givers have been providing hot meals and food parcels to the families who live there.
The organisation's Imtiaz Sooliman says, "For the rest of the week, we'll be doing daily feeding on site. From Tuesday onwards, we'll be providing food parcels to each family to last them for at least a month. We'll also be giving away blankets because it's quite cold in the area at the moment."
Meanwhile, the strikers have vowed to continue striking until their R12,500 wage demand is implemented.
Lonmin, unions and striking miners are due to meet at noon on Monday to start a fresh round of wage negotiations.
