JOHANNESBURG - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) on Friday said it was confident that George Bizos will thoroughly investigate complaints against National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega regarding the Marikana bloodbath.

On Thursday, the Legal Resource Centre (LRC) was instructed to represent the SAHRC, and some individual victims and families.

The veteran human rights lawyer will be leading a team from the LRC.

In August, President Jacob Zuma announced that a commission of inquiry would be established to investigate the murder of 34 striking Marikana protesters.

SAHRC deputy chairperson Pregs Govender said, "The findings will include identifying allegations made against the police commissioner and the conduct of the police."
