Thunderstorms, hail expected in Gauteng

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) on Thursday said a severe thunderstorm was making its way to Gauteng.

The storms were expected to hit large parts of the province within during the afternoon.

At least 28 accidents were reported on Thursday following heavy falls.

A thunderstorm warning was issued for areas in and around Johannesburg, with heavy hail also expected.

SAWS forecaster Bransby Bulo said areas that will be affected are Gauteng, western parts of Limpopo and the northern areas of the Free State.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Emergency Services said they were on high alert.

Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said people should avoid low-lying areas.

"We also want to warn motorists who are driving to be careful. We are ready for any eventuality."
