CAPE TOWN - The Social Development Ministry on Thursday said it does not want a situation where grandparents are excluded from the grant system.

Last week's watershed ruling in the South Gauteng High Court has placed the issuing of foster grants to grandparents in jeopardy.

The court found that grandparents and siblings should be disqualified from getting grants, as they have a duty to support children.

The issue was discussed at the Poverty and Inequality Conference at University of Cape Town.

It is estimated there are more than one million orphaned or abandoned children depending on grants.

The Social Development Minister's Special Advisor Zane Dangor said the ministry completely supports the role grandparents.
