Calls for CCTV cameras in prisons
The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services says security in prison is important.
CAPE TOWN - Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services said on Wednesday it's crucial that a feasible study be done, before CCTV cameras are installed in correctional facilities.
The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed such a study has not yet been carried out.
The Ministry of Correctional Services' Nontsikelelo Joungana said: "We agreed with the National Commissioner that we will come and engage in discussions where people will be free to say what the pros and cons are."
CCTVcameras could help improve security measures in prisons.
The Inspectorate's Leonard de Sousa said privacy concerns should not be a problem.
"We are not really worried about privacy in communal cells because there isn't an absolute right to privacy to prisoners in there."
