Rush on pumps as fuel price spikes
The national price of petrol is set to jump by 93 cents a litre at midnight.
JOHANNESBURG - The price of petrol is set to jump by 93 cents a litre at midnight, while diesel will increase by 69 cents a litre.
The increase will take the petrol price close to R12 per litre.
Fuel stations across Gauteng were flooded with cars on Monday afternoon.
Motorists in Johannesburg told Eyewitness News their pockets would be hit hard this month.
"Our running costs are becoming quite drastic at the moment," said one young driver.
A male motorist said it would be difficult to manage his budget because of his responsibilities as a father.
Another motorist said she was worried because the petrol price would affect food prices too.
"Bread prices are going up; everything is going to go up," she gasped.
Economists say the recent hike is the result of political tensions in the Middle East - a major oil-producing region.
The knock-on effects are expected to hit consumers soon.
