JOHANNESBURG - At least four people were shot and wounded in clashes between striking workers and security officials at the Gold One's Modder East mine near Springs on Monday.

Another four people were arrested for public violence.

On June 4, workers at the mine embarked on a strike over working conditions and pay.

Workers were dismissed by SMS on June 11 for their earlier strike.

The protesting workers were calling for the mine to give them their jobs back.

Monday's violence started after workers tried to force their way into mine property.

But police spokesperson Pinky Tsinyane said details leading to the shooting and arrests were yet to be determined.

"At this stage, we cannot confirm the number of miners or security guards that were shot."
