CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Social Development MEC Albert Fritz on Monday said he was outraged by a case involving a Delft mother, who was reportedly too intoxicated to confirm her baby's whereabouts.

The four-month-old was reported missing after she apparently disappeared on Sunday afternoon.

Police said it took the mother several hours to report the case.

The mother realised her daughter had disappeared late on Sunday afternoon.

The police's November Filander said, "According to witnesses, the 39-year-old mother had too much to drink."

Fritz said such cases are far too common in the province.

"We will assist the police to prosecute such mothers for child abuse."

The baby has been taken to a place of safety by a concerned community member.

She will be examined and will not be reunited with her mother, for now.
