Cape Town officials are expected to start searching for a two-year-old hippo calf on Wednesday.

CAPE TOWN - City officials will once again attempt to capture a young hippo that has been grazing in Gardens after leaving the Rondevlei Nature Reserve.

It was able to exit the park after a thief stole a section of the fence.

Authorities planned to dart the hippo on Tuesday evening, but their attempts failed.

Cape Town biodiversity manager Julia Wood said luck was not on their side.

"Last night, officials went out to search for the animal. There were only one or two brief sightings, so we could not capture it."

The municipality will make another attempt on Wednesday evening.

Members of the public are being reminded not to approach, chase, threaten or feed the animal.

Meanwhile, a five-year-old hippo died last week after being stuck in a pool for several days.
