Schoolgirl 'raped' by caretaker
A nine-year-old Cape Town girl has been raped, allegedly by her school caretaker.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department on Wednesday said it is investigating the rape of a nine-year-old girl, allegedly by a school caretaker.
The principal reported the matter to district officials.
Department spokesperson Paddy Atwell said the girl will be receiving trauma counselling.
"The department views the allegations in an extremely serious light. We don't have all the facts at the moment, but the matter is being investigated."
This is the second such incident reported at a primary school in Mfuleni.
Another caretaker was arrested in February, in connection with the rape and sexual abuse of a grade two pupil.
According to Interpol, a woman is raped every 17 seconds in South Africa.
Earlier in 2012, the body named South Africa as the rape capital of the world and said women were more likely to be raped than educated.
