JOHANNESBURG - Two young children have died in a shack fire in KwaThema on Gauteng's East Rand.

Paramedics were called to the scene but the badly burnt children, aged six and 11, had already died.

Officials said the children were clutching onto each other when they were found.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said, "Nothing could be done to save the kids. Three families that managed to escape were found outside watching the fire."

It is still not clear what caused the blaze.
