CAPE TOWN - The Sunshine Tour has announced the launch of the Nelson Mandela Championship, co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

The 72 hole tournament, boasts a €1 million pot.

It will be the first event of the 2012 Euro Tour and will also kick off the Race to Dubai.

Sunshine Tour Executive Director Selwyn Nathan is excited by the prospect.

"What a great start to have a partnership with the Children's Fund. We're hoping for a great field. Being a co-sanctioned event, a minimum of 50 percent of the players will be coming from outside South Africa; this will be a great start to the European Tour. "

He said there are two possible venues for the tournament.

"We're currently looking at Royal Durban Golf Club in KwaZulu-Natal and Humewood Golf Club in Nelson Mandela Bay. We just have some small negotiations before me conclude."

He added that it's an honour to be working alongside the Children's Fund.

"For us to be involved with something as outstanding as the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund as the game of golf, to put something back into the community is enormous for us."

The tournament will take place the week after the Nedbank Golf Challenge to avoid any clashes.
