Educator denied his student dignity - CGE

The Commission for Gender Equality said it was shocked at the assault of a female pupil by her teacher.

This screengrab from a cellphone video shows a Höerskool Patriot pupil being attacked by a teacher.

JOHANNESBURG - The Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) on Friday said it was shocked at the assault of a female pupil by a male teacher at an Emalahleni school in Mpumalanga.

Last week's incident was captured on video and posted to YouTube.

The video showing the brutal attack led to the suspension of the teacher.

Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga Department of Education confirmed it was investigating the attack.

Unconfirmed reports have however stated the female student was verbally harassing the teacher before he snapped.

The CGE condemned the violence and said the educator denied his student dignity.

It said he should have been able to retrain himself, regardless of what the learner had done.

The commission added that worst of all, the incident happened during Women's Month.

It is unclear whether the teacher will face a criminal charge of assault.
