JOHANNESBURG - It's understood a person has been killed in a serious taxi accident on the N1 south near the William Nicol off-ramp on Friday morning

it's believed a burst tyre caused the taxi to overturn onto an embankment.

ER24's Andre Visser confirmed that were fatalities, but it remains unclear how many.

A passenger from the minibus has been airlifted to the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital.

Meanwhile, traffic on the N1 has literally come to a standstill with cars backed up all the way to the Buccleuch interchange.

Some motorists have switched off their engines and are on top of their cars to try and catch a glimpse of the accident scene which is less than 5km ahead.

Earlier several emergency vehicles were seen milling through traffic to head to the scene while a helicopter was hovering above.
