CAPE TOWN - Investigators are on the scene of a multiple shooting at the Empire State Building in New York City.

Ten people were shot earlier and two others including the alleged gunman have died.

Some reports suggest a work dispute may have sparked the violence.

The shooting appears to have appeared at multiple locations in the very busy part of mid-town, just after 9am in New York.

Witnesses say it started in an office building, where a man then went outside, and shot another man at point range.

The alleged gunman then went on walking to the Empire State Building and shot two more people randomly.

He himself was shot; it is not yet clear if it was by his hand or someone else's.

The city's police responded immediately as the Empire State is one of the locations most guarded in post-September 11.
