Abalone poachers busted on Robben Island
A total of 22 suspected abalone poachers have been arrested in Robben Island.
CAPE TOWN - Twenty two suspected abalone poachers are behind bars, following separate busts in Gansbaai and at Robben Island.
Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries officials and the police swooped on the island on Friday morning.
A total of eight men were arrested in connection with the crime.
This followed a similar crackdown in the Cape Overberg on Thursday.
The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries' Lionel Adendorf said some of the poachers tried to resist arrest.
"On Friday morning, around 1am, out team was forced to shoot at the engines of an eight-metre long rubber duck that was used in poaching activities at Robben Island."
