JOHANNESBURG - Twelve more police officers have been arrested in connection with the Cato Manor 'hit squad', the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed on Wednesday.

In June, 20 members of the controversial Durban-based organised crime unit were arrested for allegedly murdering suspects they apprehended.

Charges against two of the suspects were withdrawn.

According to the IPID, several senior Hawks officials were arrested on Wednesday.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the procedure of arrests would be completed in coming hours.

The suspects handed themselves over to authorities and are expected to apply for bail later on Wednesday.

They will join the others in the dock when they appear in court on Thursday.

The officers arrested in June face up to 71 charges, including murder, defeating the ends of justice, and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

The group maintains the allegations against them are part of a smear campaign to discredit their work.
