Woman critically injured after pipe burst
A Mamelodi woman who tried to rescue her toddler from a flash flood is recovering in hospital.
PRETORIA - A woman seriously injured in the flash flooding in the Phomolong Informal Settlement east of Pretoria is still recovering in hospital on Tuesday after trying to rescue her child.
The young mother was rushed to a hospital near the informal settlement in Mamelodi after a water pipe underneath a group of shacks exploded.
It sent hundreds of thousands of litres of water through the area.
A resident Moses Moagi told Eyewitness News of how he saw three-year-old Tintswalo Sekele washed away by the water that came rushing through the shacks.
Moagi said Sekele's mother was injured while trying to rescue the toddler.
He likened the burst pipe to a gas bottle that exploded.
He said seconds later, the water came flowing through his home reaching his waist.
More than 1000 residents were housed at Ikageng Community Hall after their homes were damaged by the waters.
