Mantashe hits out at black tenderpreneurs
ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe on Tuesday lambasted the current BEE and tender systems.
SOWETO - ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe on Tuesday lambasted the current Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) system.
He said government money was being spent on trying to help black business, at the expense of service delivery.
Mantashe was addressing political and economic analysts at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto campus.
He also hit out at the current tender system, saying children missed out when contracts to build schools were used to build black-owned firms instead.
The Secretary General said the current tender system was indefensible.
Mantashe also hit out at black-owned businesses.
"It can't be correct that every time you give a business [to a black-owned firm], you must actually argue later on the quality of service and cost. It can't be."
Mantashe said he was looking forward to taking the debate to the Black Business Council.
