Thousands homeless after Mamelodi water pipe bursts
2 children died and over 1000 are homeless after a water pipe burst in Mamelodi.
PRETORIA - Paramedics on Monday were trying to confirm reports that a third child was killed in flooding following a burst water pipe at the Phomolong Informal Settlement in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria.
The pipe burst just after Sunday midnight.
A baby and a young child were killed and over a thousand residents evacuated from the area and placed in a nearby hall.
The burst pipe caused water to gush out and destroy many shacks.
One resident said she likened the sound of the bursting pipe to an exploding glass bottle.
Most residents managed to escape the flood, but the two children were swept away by the strong current.
The mother of one child was injured after trying to rescue her child.
Residents are still waiting for temporary housing to be made available.
