CAPE TOWN - Eyewitness News is in possession of more than 20 driver's licences which are believed to have been stolen.

The documents were found by a member of the public in the Salt River area on Friday morning.

An astonished Mitchells Plain resident, who works in the area, came across the cards strewn over a section of Bremmer Street and on a pavement.

The 49-year-old woman, who does not want to be named, said she was not sure what to do with them.

"I did not go to the police. I asked my employer for advice and we decided to hand them over to Eyewitness News ."

Some of the permits were from Germany and the Democratic Republic of Congo, but most of the cards belonged to South African citizens.

Eyewitness News has tried to locate the owners.
